Getting started with the Analog Discovery Studio Max

1. Hardware

To set up the Analog Discovery Studio Max:

First, install the Digilent WaveForms software on your PC. See Installer Details for more information.
Connect the Analog Discovery Studio Max to your PC using a USB cable, 19V DC supply and power switch to ON position.

2. Software

3. Troubleshooting

If the device is not detected by WaveForms application or experience random disconnects usually indicates contact problem. In this case, try using the original USB cable the device or other USB cables you have at hand, try using other USB port and hub. Make sure the 19V DC supply is plugged in properly.

4. Oscilloscope

The Analog Discovery Studio Max has 4 oscilloscope input channels.

Specifications:

The ADC is 14bits 100MS/s for each channel, Analog Devices AD9648.
The inputs have an impedance of 1 MΩ | 15 pF, AC/DC coupling relay.
The capture buffer is 32Ki samples for each channel.
The -3dB input bandwidth is 50 MHz and AC coupling -3dB cut-off frequency is 12 Hz.
The samples are stored in 16bits format which is useful for lower sample rate and average sampling mode. This gives at 50 MHz 15 bits and 25 MHz (or lower) 16 bit resolution.
The oversampling can combine multiple repetitive captures. The captures are shifted in four phases relative or Wavegen and Digital signals. This lets at least oversampling with 4 on signals generated by the same device. For external signal sources even higher oversampling ratios can be used.
Beside normal samples 'noise samples' are stored at lower resolution. This, to indicate high frequency components or glitches than could be hidden by normal sampling methods.
The inputs have 2 ranges, providing ~3.3 mV and ~130 uV resolution, with average sampling ~800 uV and ~30 uV, or even lower ~0.3 uV with 'Full Scale' 'Sample mode'.

5. Arbitrary Waveform Generator

The Analog Discovery Studio Max is equipped with two Arbitrary Waveform Generators channels.

Specifications:

The DAC is 14 bits and 100 MS/s, Analog Devices AD9717.
The maximum DC current drive is 30 mA.
The output impedance is 50 Ω.
The -3dB output bandwidth is 15 MHz with no load.
The offset range is -10 V to +10 V.
The carrier signal buffers are 16 Ki samples, AM and FM buffers are 4 Ki samples for each channel.
The power supply AWG function provides 4 Ki sample for carrier, 2 Ki sample for AM and FM.

6. Digital I/O

The Analog Discovery Studio Max has 24 digital I/Os (DIO 0-23).

Specifications:

DIO 0-15 are available in the MTE and DIO 16-23 on the PCI connector.
The DIO pin's high level and input logic threshold depends on the digital voltage which can be adjusted in the Supplies interface.
The Trigger and DIO signals are 5 V compatible through SN74CBT3384C bus switch and protected by ESD diodes DB3S406F and 33Ω PTC PRG15BC330MM1RC.
The Pattern Generator frequency is up to 100MHz and the custom buffer size is 16 Ki samples per channel.
The Logic Analyzer device buffer is 32Ki samples per channel.
The Trigger button on the side of the device acts as the Manual Trigger in the application.
The Trigger IOs output high voltage is 3.3V. The input threshold is ~1.5V, 5V compatible.

7. Power Supplies

The Analog Discovery Studio Max has two variable power supplies.

Soft start is adjustable as full scale time between 1ms and 84.5ms, default is 66ms.
